December 2004, Dad, Stephen and I took a 3 day, 2 night luxury cruise through the everglades.  With a canoe, kayak and plenty of dehydrated food we paddled several miles each day and were lucky enough to only see a handful of people over the course of the trip.  Our jumping off point was Everglades City where we paddled to the Kingston Key Chiki hut, a raised platform where we will pitch our tent and wait for daybreak.  Our next destination was the inappropriately named rabbit key.  There were plenty of raccoons and mosquitoes but no rabbits.  The next day we backtracked and returned to Everglades City.  We made it back home in time for Christmas with plenty of stories to tell.

Our Route

Not even in the water yet and the earth opens up and swallows Stephens shoe.

Our home for the night, a chiki hut, sits about 5 feet above the water.

This bird gave it's life so that we could have something to joke about for years. (it was not harmed... on purpose)

These tracks forshadowed the visits by the raccoons which would keep us up all night.

Trying to start a fire... or kill ants, either one.

Casa de Schurger

The second night we were attacked by horseshoe crabs, yes, we got crabs.

No one was safe

Dolphin, see it, right there.

The mosquitos were relentless and would attack anyone how wasn't wearing snappy headgear.
