With all the other campsites closed this time of year we went to Big Medow 51 miles into the park. Kudos to the NPS for it's creative names.
We got there late and almost had to set up our luxerious accomidations in the dark.
Tending the fire. You all are probably wondering what the jumper cables are for. I would be too.
A rare look into our bedroom. About 30 degrees outside.
The next day we were able to get a hike in before we headed back to DC
The ominously named Dark Hollow Falls.
My little trooper, still smiling after waking up with frost on the tent.
I sacrificed a dry shirt for this picture

Being read "Green Eggs and Ham" by one of history's greatest minds.
Before we moved downtown and were innundated with the history of our great nation we decided to experience our country the way the settlers did, by packing up the SUV and making 'smores Thanksgiving weekend. This tunnel foreshadows what we were in for in Shenandoah National Park. My brother notes that it captures a roll over anticline with a listric fault cutting through it... wow.
This bear was pretty exciting, hungry and foraging for food, anything could have happened. If it wasn't for about 100 yards between us, the road, being inside the car and the fact the bear was ignoring us, we would have been dinner. Like I said, pretty close.
We finally made it downtown and within a week of being here it snowed. Only a couple of inches, but for a couple of kids who have spent 4 years in Tampa who just came from St. Thomas it may as well been a blizzard.
For those of you who know my love and obsessive compulsiveness surrounding oyster knives. I give you the holy grail... Julia Child's oyster knife. Take it in and imagine the magic it has once worked.
This is the World War II Memorial. By far one of the most impressive sites in DC. I was fortunate to see it before it was drained for the winter.
Darwin's Finches. These unassuming birds sparked the concept of adaption and subsequently the evoloution debate which has been raging ever since.
