DENALI

The weekend of June 14-17th we went to Denali National Park actually spending the first night in cabins to the south of the park and then setting up camp inside the part for the next two nights.  The trip was marked by unbelievable scenery and some wildlife sightings that were second to none.  The official name of the tallest mountain in North America is Mt. McKinley but it is commonly known by it's native name Denali, which means "the great one".  I like the native name better, it sounds more appropriate, less like a large sandwich at McDonald's.  We weren't able to see the mountain while in the park boundaries.  It was clouded over as it is much of the time.  However the pictures of the mountain you see were taken after a long and somewhat confusing hike filled with several letdowns as we climbed to the top of several hills only to be treated to views of the next hill we were to climb.  Most of the animals we saw were in the park and had the kindness to pose for us on the side of the only road through it's 2 million acres.  I've never seen this much out of a bus window in my life.  We also had a short video of the bear and it's cubs.  I wouldn't wait for it to load if you have a slow connection but it makes Catherine laugh every time she looks at it so you might want to give it a look here.

Update:  I have added some pictures from our flightseeing trip that we took when my dad was in town.  We started south of the mountain and flew up to the base and around the southern features of the mountain.  We were unable to fly around the summit but I wasn't disappointed.  It was incredible.
